Fun Ways To Improve Memory That Anyone Can Do March 29, 2010
The power of your brain is immense, but the old term, ‘If it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ does not really apply to your brain. Throughout our lives, our brains will keep growing as we learn more and more new information. New connections are made and different areas of your brain are strengthened. If you are worried about strengthening the parts of your brain that control memory, let me tell you some fun ways to improve memory.
1. Get Active – You might expect that most ways to improve memory would be done sitting down, but studies have shown that your memory benefits from exercise. In as little as two weeks of low impact cardio exercise, your brain will start to show physical differences in the areas that involve memory. This is because exercise that increases your hear rate also increases the amount of oxygen that it sent to your brain. Getting in shape can help you remember more.
2. Learn Something New – New information creates new connections inside the old noggin. If you try to learn a new skill every once in a while, you will be fighting off the effects of aging memory loss. The new skill doesn’t have to relate to memory – it can be anything. Kirk Erickson, a noted memory researcher, says that simply learning how to complete a new type of puzzle can help you concentrate while driving.
3. Take A Break – Studies have shown that taking a few moments to allow your brain to digest new information is a great way to keep your thoughts organized and your memory sharp and crisp. So think about taking a walk after an important meeting, or take a moment to enjoy a coffee break after you have learned about something new.
Use these three ways to improve memory as often as you can. You might be amazed to find how quickly your mind will sharpen up.
