Headaches and Memory Loss – What Do I Do Now?
If you are experiencing headaches and memory loss, don’t worry. These are two of the most common symptoms associated with migraine headaches. But what is a migraine headache, and how can it be treated? There is also a small chance of another underlying condition.
Migraines are suffered by over 303 million people worldwide and affect more women than men. They are accompanied by headaches that can last several hours or several days. Typically they are located on one side of the head and characterized by a constant throbbing rather than a sharp pain. Unfortunately the cause is unknown but there are several ways to treat them.
The symptoms include headaches and memory loss, sensitivity to light, vertigo, nausea and fatigue to name a few. These symptoms can range from uncomfortable to debilitating and while they are not life threatening, migraineurs can attest to the fact they are excruciatingly painful.
When seeing a doctor for suspected migraines, you may want to keep a “headache journal” detailing the frequency, duration and symptoms of the affliction. The most widely prescribed drug to treat migraines is Topamax, a seizure prevention drug. While effective, researchers are still unsure of just how it affects migraines.
There is a small chance that headaches combined with memory loss are the result of Hughes Syndrome. Also known as “sticky blood syndrome”, those with Hughes tend to develop blood clots more frequently than others. This can cause blood flow to the brain to slow or even stop, damaging the cells that contain our memory. This can also lead to stroke. Therefore, those who experience both headache and memory loss are encouraged to consult a physician.
Headaches and memory loss are not something to worry about; the chances they signify underlying conditions are slim, and are typical of migraines. However, it is always advisable to meet with your doctor to rule out more dangerous afflictions.
