Those of us who were not blessed with genius level IQ’s are constantly asking how to improve short term memory. The best way is always to understand just what short term memory is, then using some simple techniques to increase your brain capacity.
Short term memory is where our brain stores brand new pieces of information and ideas for just a couple seconds. The number of items we can store is widely considered by psychologists to be “seven plus or minus two”. This is also known as the magic number.
When we associate the memory to others in our minds and repeat them over and over they become long term memories. Skills like driving are learned in this manner; if you’ve ever felt a particular skill was on auto-pilot, chances are you’ve accessed your long term memory. But to store these properly, we need to know how to improve short term memory.
First, when trying to remember something try to be in a calm, pleasing mood. We can remember things better when we are in the same mood as when we learned them in the first place. Pay close attention to detail and write down anything that will be important later.
Next, condense the information as much as possible. We do this automatically with things like phone numbers by memorizing three groups rather than ten numbers. You can remember a four digit PIN number such as 4678 much easier as “forty six seventy eight” than “four six seven eight”.
Finally, exercise your brain with games and puzzles. Logic puzzles are abundant on the internet, and crosswords are found in your daily newspaper. These provide a sufficient mental work out for your brain.
Now you know how to improve short term memory. Remember to associate ideas to feelings and emotions, and to write down or condense important details. Finally, give yourself a mental workout with logic puzzles and crosswords to permanently expand your mind.
