How Do I Improve Long Term Memory? February 10, 2010

There are many techniques you can use right away to improve long term memory.  While the biological factors surrounding long term memory are not fully understood, researchers have suggested several ways you can train your brain to memorize things more easily.

First, short term memories become long term memories through rehearsal and associating them in the brain.  Theses memories can last for a few days or many years and are typically practices and procedures someone needs to know for work, school or every day life.  Driving a car is an example.  When we first learn to drive a car it becomes a short term memory.  After repetition, the ability to drive becomes  a long term memory.

Mnemonic devices have recently come about as one of the best ways to improve long term memory, even in those with learning disabilities.  Mnemonics are simply procedures that associate ideas into words.  One of the most well known mnemonics is used to recall the colors of the rainbow. ROY G. BIV stands for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.  This can work in the opposite direction also.  Every Good Boy Does Fine represents the musical notes of the bass clef, E,G,B,D and F.

Mnemonics can also be used in mathematics.  To remember pi to seven decimal places, use How I Wish I Could Calculate Pi.  The letters in each word represent the number, or 3.141592

While repetition can help, it is important to space out studying sessions.  When a test is nearing, teachers are encouraged to hand out review materials early rather than the day before say researchers at the University of California in San Diego.  This prevents cramming sessions and allows rehearsal of the material over time.

You can start using these techniques right away.  Chances are that you have used them in the past, but may not be aware of how important they are to improve long term memory.
