Improving Brain Function Is As Simple As Resting March 28, 2010

There have been incredible advancements in the study of memory in the last few years. One great find is that improving brain function can be done through ways that we have never really thought about before. Let me tell you about a few of them.

A great way to start thinking better involves – nothing. That’s right, after you learn something new you should take a moment to do basically nothing. Take a coffee break, or take a walk after a long meeting. You mind needs the time to rest and to consolidate the information that it just received. As you were learning the new pieces of data you were cramming your short term memory full of information. Now you can take some time to let your brain sort it all neatly into your long term memory.

We used to think that all of this was done while we were sleeping. It is still true that your mind gets a lot done while you sleep, but recent studies have revealed that activity between the hippocampus and neocortex increases during wakeful resting periods. These are two areas of the brain that are highly involved in the processing of new information. Wakeful rest will allow your mind to clear so you can use your brain more efficiently.

The next method of improving brain function is to do the exact opposite of resting – get active. When you do physical activity, your hera rate rises. This increases the amount of oxygen that is carried to your brain by your red blood cells. The best way to get the most oxygen to your brain is by doing cardiovascular workouts. Studies have shown that just as little as two weeks of cardio workouts can cause a positive physical difference in your brain.

When you are improving brain function throughout your life, always remember that a healthier brain will always run more efficiently and work better overall. Do what you can to keep your body and mind healthy.
