Memory and diabetes have been grouped together for a very long time. There have always been questions as to whether the condition of diabetes actually affects the memory on not. There have been many studies on the matter, but until recently, researchers were not sure exactly which part of the brain was affected.
The connection between memory and diabetes was made very early because of the place that memories are stored – the brain. The brain is highly affected by the levels of blood glucose in the body. Recent research shows that high blood sugar levels are linked to memory loss. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that is primarily concerned with memories and learning. Research has shown that the specific area of the hippocampus that deals with aging memory loss – called the dentate gyrus – is agitated by high glucose levels.
So what does that mean? It means that it is very likely that age related memory and diabetes may be strongly connected. If you are entering the age range when you may start experienced age related memory problems, you should start taking steps to lower your blood sugar levels in order to avoid trouble with your memory. This research leads experts to believe that even if you do not have diabetes, that your memory functions may still be affected by unhealthy blood sugar levels.
The best way to maintain a healthy blood glucose level is to exercise regularly. What does regularly mean? It means that you should spend at least 20 minutes focusing on rasing your heart rate. Do this at least three times each week.
Then, not only will you be on your way to solving the problem between memory and diabetes, but you will also enjoy the added benefits of a healthy body. A healthy body is able to send more oxygen to the brain which results in increased memory.
