Seizure Memory Loss – Will it Happen to Me? February 4, 2010

Seizure memory loss occurs when a seizure victim forgets the episode after it happens.  A little more than four percent of the population will have a seizure by the age of eighty and it may be a sign of a more severe condition.

Seizures occur when the brain’s neurons become over active.  When most people think of someone having a seizure, they imagine them writhing on the ground or foaming at the mouth.  However, this is not always the case.  Some people have been known to have a seizure and not one person is the wiser until after the fact.  For instance, there are stories of people playing and finishing card games while in the middle of a seizure.

Patients will experience seizure memory loss when the seizure is contained wholly or partially in the part of the brain responsible for storing memories, the hippocampus.  In rare cases, the only symptom of this type of amnesiac seizure is memory loss.  What makes this especially dangerous is the difficulty in diagnosing the seizure.

Memory loss accompanying a seizure may also be the sign of a stroke.  Any time you or someone you know is unaware of the passage of time for any period it is important to consult a doctor to rule out any life-threatening injuries or diseases.

When someone is having a seizure near you, make sure that the area around them is free of dangerous objects.  If involuntary movements occur, do not suppress them; simply let the seizure run it’s course.  Call for help immediately if the seizure lasts more than five minutes.

Seizure memory loss is not usually permanent, but can cause confusion and depression.  People are typically drowsy and fatigued after experiencing a seizure and it is best to calmly tell them what happened after they have been medically cleared.
