Memory loss is a symptom of many conditions, diseases and injury.  But sudden short term memory loss is characterized by quick onset unlike the memory problems caused by Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease.  There are, however, ways to prevent it.

Sudden short term memory loss is typically caused by head injury, poisoning or drug intoxication.  The afflicted person will not remember the recent past, sometimes up to a few days before the damage.  While they can remember procedures such as driving and memories from childhood, someone who experiences sudden memory loss may not remember what they did the night before.

When the head is injured, blood flow to the brain can slow or stop, damaging the brain cells associated not only with memory, but hearing, sight and mobility as well.

Poison is ingested rapidly, and depending on the incubation period, can spread to the brain within hours.  Bacterial infection can also cause damage to the nerves related to memory.

Drugs like alcohol can also cause sudden short term memory loss.  Alcohol (commonly known as a “downer”) slows the body’s processes including blood pressure.  Anytime blood flow to the brain is disrupted, there is always a chance damage may occur.  Sometimes it is irreparable.

There are ways to prevent this from occurring  Be proactive; always wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle, snowmobiling or even skiing.  Never eat meat or shellfish raw.  Meat should reach an internal temperature between 180 and 190 degrees Fahrenheit before consumption.  This will insure any illness causing bacteria is killed.  Finally, enjoy vices like alcohol responsibly.

Sudden short term memory loss is the most easily preventable form of memory loss.  Taking precaution and avoiding dangerous behavior are measures that will prevent any number of conditions and injury.
