Your short term memory is what stores information that you will use rather quickly. After you use process this information, it can either be held in your long term memory or discarded. A lot us might need some help remembering those little bits of information that keep escaping us minutes after we first learn them. Here are some great tips to improve short term memory that you can start using today.

The first tip is called ‘chunking’. When you have to remember something, like a phone number for instance, you will most likely not remember 555837465. You will think of the number in chunks like 555-837-7465 – because it is much easier to remember that way. You can remember other things by chunking as well. You can study for a test by chunking pieces of information together under one subject. You can remember directions by thinking about them in chunks.

Another way to improve short term memory would be to take ginko leaf extract supplements. Studies have suggested that ginko has properties that actually work to improve short term memory. However, there are very few actual medicines that are made from from ginko and they are not well tested.

A great way to have a better memory is work out on a regular basis. When you raise your heat rate through exercise or physical activity, you are increasing the amount of blood that gets to your brain and delivers oxygen. A brain with a healthy supply of oxygen will run more efficiently than one that does not. Memory – both short and long term – have been shown to increase with exercise.

Take these tips to heart if you find that remembering little bits of info is harder than it used to be. The average healthy adult can only store about seven pieces of information in their short term memory, so take care of yours so that number doesn’t decrease.
